Wiggle Room
Margrit Lewczuk • Matthew Magee • Douglas Culhane
September 7 - 30, 2012
Imogen Holloway Gallery is proud to present Wiggle Room, featuring work by Matthew Magee and Margrit Lewczuk. Rhythm is what these two artists share in abundance. Seismic tremors from below Earth’s skin and the hypnotic shimmy of primal dance inspire the drawings, paintings, sculpture and collages featured in this exhibition. Magee's hard edge paintings in oil based on seismic echoes are crisp but never austere. Also on view is his playful sculpture of dangling felt globes and a collage of shimmering metal chips. Lewczuk's drawings and collage, preparatory works-on-paper for her large oil paintings, have a language singularly their own. Her effervescent colors and a mask-like patterns have an exotic pulse: that conjures the distant rumblings of a primitive song. Both Lewczuk and Magee make visual an inner cadence that might be an unconscious tempo, quiet but everywhere.
