Gene Benson FROM THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN October 4 - December 1, 2013
IHGallery is proud to present "From the Side of the Mountain", solo show of paintings by Gene Benson. Mr. Benson's studio, nestled in the side of a Catskill mountain, is the obvious birthplace of his small scale oil landscapes. Painted on panel in a clear autumnal palette rich in golds, burnt oranges and cobalt blues, his layered forms are kept afloat by clean whites and grounded by deep inky indigoes. The sometimes buxom, sometimes sharply pointed shapes based on hills, trees, rocks and brush are often so tightly stacked they trip over themselves racing to the horizon's edge. His skies, when present, are delirious with waves. Although Mr. Benson maintains the basic structure of a landscape he reduces the ingredients very nearly to abstraction and employs color patterns inspired by Breughel to create a depth of field rich in sophisticated rhythms. The result is a truly otherworldly Catskill mountain view, crowded, pulsating, and vibrant. Gene Benson works and lives in Boiceville, NY.
